Description
This beautifully restored 1949 Plymouth woody brings back memories of long ago. This image was taken at Cape Canaveral Beach in Florida.
In 1929, Ford’s original production “station wagon” was designed to haul people and luggage to and from train stations. But by the 1950s, they were just secondhand cars, cheap and roomy companions for surfers’ rambling trips along the coast. Film and song soon followed, and woodies and surfing were permanently intertwined.
In 1950, Plymouth discontinued their woodie station wagon. Buick's 1953 Super Estate Wagon and 1953 Roadmaster Estate Wagon were the last production American station wagons to retain real wood construction. Other marques by then were touting the advantages of "all-steel" construction to the buying public.
